Umeda and Kita

5 stations Kita-ku Shops to 21:00

Umeda is not really a district. It is the largest rail interchange in western Japan with a city grown over the top of it, and the reason everyone finds it confusing is that five stations with three different names sit within four hundred metres and none of them connects to the others in a straight line.

JR calls its station Osaka. Hankyu and Hanshin each call theirs Osaka-Umeda. Osaka Metro has Umeda, Higashi-Umeda and Nishi-Umeda on three different lines, and they are not the same station either. Directions given as “at Umeda Station” are therefore useless, and that is the single most common cause of lost time in Osaka.

The rail arithmetic

Four operators, four fare systems. JR West runs the Loop Line and the shinkansen connection at Shin-Osaka, one stop north. Hankyu goes to Kyoto, Kobe and Takarazuka. Hanshin goes to Kobe the other way and to Koshien. Osaka Metro is the city subway, and it is a different company from JR entirely – they do not through-ticket, and the Loop Line and the Midosuji subway are not interchangeable even where they look parallel on a map.

The passes follow that split. The Enjoy Eco Card at ¥820 on weekdays and ¥620 at weekends covers metro and city buses only. The Osaka Amazing Pass at ¥3,500 for one day and ¥5,000 for two covers the metro plus attractions, but not JR. If your day is a Loop Line day, neither helps.

From Kansai Airport to Umeda, JR Haruka costs ¥2,380 unreserved to Osaka Station. The old ICOCA & HARUKA discount package was discontinued in September 2023 and is still recommended by a great deal of published advice; it no longer exists. For Namba, the Nankai Airport Express at ¥970 is much better value, but it does not come here.

What is actually here

Department stores, mostly, and very good ones: Hankyu Umeda’s food hall is among the best in Japan and costs nothing to walk through. Above Osaka Station, the free roof gardens and the Toki no Hiroba plaza give you a view down the platforms that is worth five minutes.

Twenty minutes’ walk south is Nakanoshima, where the National Museum of Art sits underground with a ¥430 collection ticket, and a further ten minutes east is Nakazakicho – a surviving pocket of pre-war wooden houses ten minutes on foot from the tallest buildings in the district, and by far the most interesting thing within walking distance of Umeda.

Hotels here are concentrated and expensive: the Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons are both in Kita. Remember that the Osaka accommodation tax doubled on 1 September 2025 and now starts at ¥5,000 a night rather than ¥7,000.

Frequently asked questions

Why are there so many Umeda stations?

Because four rail companies built separate terminals at the same interchange. JR calls its station Osaka, Hankyu and Hanshin both call theirs Osaka-Umeda, and Osaka Metro has three stations named Umeda, Higashi-Umeda and Nishi-Umeda on three different lines.

Is Umeda or Namba better to stay in?

Umeda for rail connections, department stores and the shinkansen at Shin-Osaka. Namba for eating, nightlife and the airport run on Nankai. Umeda is more comfortable; Namba is more Osaka.

How do I get from Kansai Airport to Umeda?

JR Haruka to Osaka Station, ¥2,380 unreserved, now stopping at Osaka Station via the Umekita platforms. The ICOCA & HARUKA discount package was discontinued in September 2023 despite still being widely recommended.

What is the best thing to do in Umeda?

The Umeda Sky Building observatory at ¥2,000, open until 22:30, ideally about forty minutes before sunset. Then walk ten minutes east to Nakazakicho, which is the opposite of everything else in the district.

Does the Osaka Amazing Pass cover JR trains?

No. It covers Osaka Metro, city buses and some private lines, plus around forty attractions. JR, including the Osaka Loop Line, is a separate company and is not included in any Osaka city pass.
