Four Seasons Hotel Osaka

MICHELIN One Key Kita-ku Rates not published

Four Seasons Hotel Osaka opened in 2024, holds a MICHELIN One Key, and does one thing none of the other Osaka luxury hotels does: it has a modern-ryokan floor, tatami-floored rooms with shoji screens and Japanese bathing, inside a contemporary high-rise.

As with every hotel in this bracket, rates are not published and we will not invent one. What is fixed is the Osaka accommodation tax, which doubled on 1 September 2025 and will add ¥500 per person per night at this price level, collected at the hotel.

In this guide

The ryokan floor, and what it is for

Gensui occupies its own floor and is run as a separate concept: tatami, low furniture, sliding screens, a bathing room with a deep soaking tub, and a kaiseki-influenced breakfast. It is not a themed room, it is a distinct operation with its own staff, and the hotel treats it that way.

The honest assessment is that it is a very good hotel version of a ryokan, not a ryokan. What a real ryokan gives you – a family running the building, dinner brought to your room by the person who cooked it, an onsen fed by actual geothermal water, a town outside that shuts at eight – is not available on the fourteenth floor of a tower in a city of two and a half million. If you have three nights in Japan and one of them can be in the mountains, spend it there instead.

What this floor is genuinely good for is the traveller who wants the form without the commitment: no rural detour, no dinner at 18:00, no shared bathing, and a concierge and a lift downstairs. For a first trip to Japan with a tight itinerary, that is a reasonable trade and it is the best-executed version of it in the city.

The rest of the hotel

The standard rooms are large by Osaka standards, quiet, and finished to the level the brand implies. Nothing about them is surprising, which at this price is a compliment rather than a complaint. The spa and pool are full-size, which is not true of every luxury hotel in central Osaka, where floorplates are tight.

Food and beverage is the strong suit across the building, and the bar programme is better than the hotel-bar average in a city that has very few serious cocktail rooms – only two Osaka bars appear anywhere on Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2026.

It sits in Kita, north of the river, which puts it on the same side of the city as the Ritz-Carlton and within reach of Umeda, the National Museum of Art on Nakanoshima and the river walks.

The tax, in numbers

Osaka Prefecture’s accommodation tax, per person per night, since 1 September 2025: exempt below ¥5,000; ¥200 from ¥5,000 to ¥14,999; ¥400 from ¥15,000 to ¥19,999; ¥500 at ¥20,000 and above.

Two changes happened at once. The rates roughly doubled, and the exemption threshold was cut from ¥7,000 to ¥5,000, which pulled a large tranche of mid-range hotels and business hotels into the tax for the first time. If you are comparing a budget option against this one, note that the cheap option probably now attracts tax where it did not in 2024.

It is charged at the property, in addition to whatever you paid the booking channel, and it applies per person rather than per room. A couple staying four nights at this level pays ¥4,000 in tax alone.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Four Seasons Osaka per night?

Rates are not published and we do not quote one. The hotel prices dynamically by date and room type. Check the official site for your dates and add the accommodation tax.

What is the ryokan floor?

Gensui, a floor of tatami-matted rooms with shoji screens, Japanese bathing and a kaiseki-influenced breakfast, operated as a separate concept within the hotel.

Is it as good as a real ryokan?

No, and it is not trying to be. A genuine ryokan means a family-run building, in-room dinner and often real hot-spring water, usually outside a city. This is the best hotel version of the form, for travellers who cannot fit a rural night in.

How much tax is added?

¥500 per person per night in the top band. The Osaka accommodation tax doubled on 1 September 2025 and the exemption threshold dropped from ¥7,000 to ¥5,000 at the same time.

Does it have a MICHELIN Key?

Yes, one Key. All four of the Osaka hotels covered on this site hold a MICHELIN Key.
