Luggage forwarding

Yamato, Sagawa, JAL ABC Prices checked 16 Sep 2026

Before anything else: almost every English-language page about this is quoting a stale price table. Yamato raised its fares on 1 December 2025. Guides published in July and August 2026 are still printing the April 2024 numbers – ¥2,310 for a size-140 Tokyo to Kansai, ¥2,630 for a size-160 – which are fifteen to twenty per cent below what you will actually be charged.

The figures below come from Yamato's own fare list and its December 2025 fare PDF. They are what the counter will ask you for.

What it actually costs now

Case sizeTokyo → Kyoto/OsakaWithin KansaiTokyo → Hokkaidō
100 cm / 10 kg¥1,650¥1,530¥2,050
120 cm / 15 kg¥2,170¥2,040¥2,610
140 cm / 20 kg – mid-size case¥2,780¥2,630¥3,250
160 cm / 25 kg – large check-in¥3,160¥3,020¥3,630
180 cm / 30 kg¥4,480¥3,680¥5,220

Size is width plus depth plus height. The hard ceiling is 200 cm and 30 kg, with no single side over 170 cm. Two people with two large cases moving Tokyo to Kyoto is ¥6,320, which is worth holding next to the price of simply taking them on the train.

Next day – except where it is not

Next-day is standard and genuinely reliable on the corridor most visitors use: Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Kanazawa, Sendai.

Roughly two days to or from Hokkaidō, Aomori, Akita, Iwate, Nagasaki, Miyazaki, Kagoshima, Okinawa and the islands. That list is most of the places people go specifically to get away from the crowds, which is worth noticing before you build a plan around forwarding.

Same-day exists but the zone is tiny and ward-specific – parts of central Kyoto, Osaka and Kobe only. To an airport, send the bag at least two days before you fly, three from some areas. That is the most repeated operational rule in the whole business.

The honest case against

There is a real argument that forwarding is overrated, and it is not really about the money.

You have to pack a second bag every time. Passport, medication, chargers, toiletries and a change of clothes travel with you, because the main case arrives tomorrow. On an itinerary with two nights per city, the bag you paid to move is in transit for a meaningful share of the trip.

The timing kills short stops. Hand in around noon, receive it tomorrow. On a one-night stop the case arrives roughly as you leave. This is not a substitute for a coin locker.

Not every hotel takes deliveries. Smaller properties lack the storage, and unmanned or self-check-in accommodation – increasingly common in Kyoto and Osaka – cannot receive one at all. Confirm when you book, not when you arrive.

Wrong-branch misdelivery is real. Japanese hotel chains run several same-named properties in one city. Getting the branch wrong on the waybill sends your clothes across town.

When it is clearly worth it

Forwarding earns its price in three situations. Long stays per city: three or more nights, so the bag is with you for nearly all of it. A day with stairs in it – moving from Tokyo to Kyoto and sightseeing at the far end before check-in. And the airport run, where sending the case ahead two days turns a dragging morning into a walk.

On the ten-day route on this site, the one leg where it obviously pays is Hakone: you want an overnight bag for the ryokan and nothing else, and the case can go straight to Kyoto.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to send a suitcase from Tokyo to Kyoto?

¥2,780 for a mid-size case (140 cm) and ¥3,160 for a large one (160 cm), on Yamato's fare table effective 1 December 2025. Guides quoting ¥2,310 or ¥2,630 are using the superseded April 2024 table.

Is luggage forwarding in Japan worth it?

It depends on your nights per city. Three or more nights and it clearly pays. On a one-night stop the case arrives as you leave, and you still have to carry an overnight bag either way.

How long does takkyubin take?

Next day on the main Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka corridor. About two days to Hokkaidō, Okinawa, the far north of Honshu and southern Kyushu. To an airport, send it at least two days ahead.

What is the deadline to hand a bag in?

Aim for noon at a hotel front desk, though each hotel sets its own. Yamato service centres work to 10:00 for same-day and for next-morning airport delivery. Convenience stores accept parcels, but some refuse anything over size 180.

Can I send luggage to my Airbnb?

Usually not. Unmanned and self-check-in accommodation cannot receive a delivery, and this is a growing problem in Kyoto and Osaka. Check before you book if forwarding is part of your plan.
