The Ritz-Carlton, Osaka

MICHELIN One Key Umeda, Kita-ku Rates not published

The Ritz-Carlton, Osaka holds a MICHELIN One Key, the guide’s equivalent of a star for hotels, and has been the reference luxury address in the city since it opened in 1997.

We do not print a nightly rate for it, and neither should anybody else. Hotels at this level do not publish fixed rates; what you pay depends on the season, the day, the room category and how full the city is, and a figure quoted in a guide is a snapshot of one search on one afternoon. What we can tell you precisely is the tax, because that is set by law.

The accommodation tax, which did change

Osaka Prefecture doubled its accommodation tax on 1 September 2025 and cut the exemption threshold at the same time. The bands, per person per night, are now:

Under ¥5,000: exempt. ¥5,000 to ¥14,999: ¥200. ¥15,000 to ¥19,999: ¥400. ¥20,000 and above: ¥500.

The exemption floor used to be ¥7,000 and the top band used to be half what it now is, so any advice written before autumn 2025 understates this. At a hotel of this class you will be in the top band, which means ¥500 per person per night added to the bill, collected at the property rather than by the booking site. Two people for three nights is ¥3,000 that does not appear in your booking confirmation.

By national standards that is still modest – Kyoto raised its own top band to ¥10,000 a night in March 2026 – but it is not nothing, and it is not included in the rate you are quoted.

What kind of hotel it is

Unusually for a Japanese city hotel, it is not modern. The design brief was an eighteenth and nineteenth-century English country house, and it was executed without irony: dark panelling, antiques bought at auction, oil paintings, deep carpet, a fireplace. In a city whose other luxury hotels are glass towers with minimalist lobbies, it is a genuine outlier, and people either love it or find it faintly absurd.

The rooms are larger than the Osaka norm and the service is the thing the hotel is actually known for – this property has a long-standing reputation within the group, and the staff ratio shows. The food and beverage operation is serious, including a French restaurant and a Japanese restaurant, and the bar is a proper hotel bar rather than a lounge with cocktails.

It occupies floors within a tower in Umeda, so there is no grand exterior; you arrive through a business district and go up.

Umeda, and whether you want to be here

Umeda is the rail centre: JR Osaka, Hankyu and Hanshin Osaka-Umeda, three Osaka Metro stations, and Shin-Osaka for the shinkansen one stop north. If your trip has day trips in it – Kyoto, Kobe, Nara, Himeji – this is the right side of the city and the saving in daily walking is real.

The trade is atmosphere. Umeda at ten at night is an office district with department stores in it. The eating and drinking that make Osaka worth visiting are in Minami, fifteen minutes south on the Midosuji line, and you will be making that journey both ways most evenings.

Two things worth knowing are within walking distance: the Umeda Sky Building, open to 22:30, and Nakazakicho, which is ten minutes east and is the most interesting square kilometre in northern Osaka. The Four Seasons is the other One Key hotel on this side of the river.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the Ritz-Carlton Osaka cost?

Rates are not published and we do not quote one. Hotels at this level price dynamically by season, day and room category. Check the hotel’s own site for your dates, and add the accommodation tax on top.

What is the Osaka accommodation tax?

Since 1 September 2025: exempt under ¥5,000, ¥200 from ¥5,000 to ¥14,999, ¥400 from ¥15,000 to ¥19,999 and ¥500 at ¥20,000 and above, per person per night. At this hotel expect the top band.

Does it have a MICHELIN Key?

Yes, one Key. The MICHELIN Key is the guide’s hotel award, introduced in 2024, and it is separate from the restaurant stars.

Is Umeda a good place to stay?

For rail access, yes – it is the best-connected district in the city and the shinkansen is one stop away. For eating and drinking, Namba is better, and you will be travelling south most evenings.

Is the hotel modern?

No, deliberately. It is designed as an English country house, with panelling, antiques and oil paintings, which makes it the outlier among Osaka’s luxury hotels rather than one of the glass towers.
