The National Museum of Art, Osaka
The collection exhibition here is ¥430. That is not a typographical error and it is not a concession rate; it is one of the lowest admission charges at any national museum in Japan, for a collection that runs from Picasso, Miro and Cezanne through Yves Klein to contemporary Japanese work.
It closes on Mondays, which is worth holding next to the fact that the Osaka Museum of History closes on Tuesdays. Osaka splits its museum closures across two days and there is no shortcut around checking.

The whole museum is underground
Above ground there is only a sculpture: a splayed steel and glass structure by the Argentine architect César Pelli, which is usually described as bamboo and reads more like a half-buried machine. Everything else – three exhibition floors, the shop, the restaurant – is below the surface of Nakanoshima, because the island is narrow, flood-prone and already full.
The practical consequences are real. There is no natural light anywhere in the galleries, which suits the collection and does not suit everyone. There is no view, no roof terrace and nothing to wander out into. And it is completely weatherproof, which in a city with Osaka’s June rain and August heat makes it the single most reliable wet-day plan in the centre.
The building moved here from Suita in 2004, having started life as the Expo ’70 pavilion for electric power. Its current form dates entirely from that relocation.
What is in it, and the Friday rate
The permanent holdings are strongest in post-war and contemporary art, with a solid European modernist spine. Rotations are frequent, so what is hanging on any given month varies; the ¥430 ticket buys whatever the current collection display is, not a fixed set of famous paintings, and anyone arriving expecting a specific canvas should check the schedule first.
The special exhibitions are the museum’s main draw for Japanese visitors and are priced separately and considerably higher. They are usually worth it; they are also usually busy on weekends in a way the collection show never is.
The detail almost nobody uses: on Fridays the museum stays open until 20:00 and the collection exhibition drops to ¥250 in the evening. Two hundred and fifty yen. For a national art museum, on a Friday night, in a building that is quiet at that hour because its own neighbours do not know about it. If you are in Osaka on a Friday and at a loose end between dinner and drinks, this is the answer.
What else is on the island
Nakanoshima is the long sandbar between the Dojima and Tosabori rivers, and it is the closest thing Osaka has to a civic quarter: the city hall, the 1918 red-brick Central Public Hall, the prefectural Nakanoshima Library, the Museum of Oriental Ceramics and, since 2022, the dark-red-boxed Nakanoshima Museum of Art directly next door to this one. Two national-standard art museums within ninety seconds’ walk is not something Osaka gets credit for.
Watanabebashi on the Keihan Nakanoshima line is five minutes away, Higobashi on the Yotsubashi subway about the same. From Umeda it is a twenty-minute walk south along the river, which is a pleasant way to arrive and takes you past the public hall.
Frequently asked questions
How much is the National Museum of Art, Osaka?
¥430 for the collection exhibition, one of the cheapest national museum admissions in Japan. Special exhibitions are charged separately and cost considerably more.
What day is it closed?
Mondays, and the New Year period. If a national holiday falls on a Monday it usually opens and closes the following day instead. Note the Osaka Museum of History closes Tuesdays, not Mondays.
Is there a cheaper time to visit?
Yes. On Fridays the museum opens until 20:00 and the collection exhibition costs ¥250 in the evening. It is the best-value art ticket in Kansai and it is very lightly used.
Is the museum really all underground?
Yes. Only the steel entrance sculpture by César Pelli is above ground; all three exhibition floors are below the surface of Nakanoshima. That makes it completely weatherproof and entirely without natural light.
What is nearby?
The Nakanoshima Museum of Art is next door, the Museum of Oriental Ceramics is a few minutes east, and the 1918 Central Public Hall is on the same island. It is the densest cluster of museums in Osaka.
