Tombori River Cruise

¥2,000 11:00–21:00 Tazaemon-bashi pier

¥2,000, about twenty minutes, departing on the hour and the half-hour from 11:00 to 21:00 from the pier at Tazaemon-bashi, beside the Don Quijote with the ferris wheel on the front of it. Tickets are same-day only and are bought at the pier; there is no advance booking to organise.

It is free on the Osaka Amazing Pass, which changes the calculation completely. At ¥2,000 for twenty minutes it is expensive per minute; as one of the three big free items on a ¥3,500 pass day it is the one that makes the pass work.

What twenty minutes on the water gets you

The boat runs a short loop along the Dotonbori canal and back, passing under a series of low bridges with the signboards directly overhead. The reason it works is angle: from the pavement you look along the canal and the signs are at forty-five degrees, half of them obscured by each other and all of them with a crowd in front. From the water you look up at them, one after another, with nothing in the way.

The Glico running man, the Kani Doraku crab, the Kinryu ramen dragon, the pufferfish: all of them are designed to be read from the bridges and the canal, because that is where the traffic was when they went up. The boat is the intended viewing position.

It is also the only quiet twenty minutes available in Minami on a Saturday evening. You are sitting down, the crowd is above you, and the commentary is cheerful and brief.

When to go, and the July suspension

After dark. The whole point is illuminated signage and a daytime sailing is half a trip. The last departure at 21:00 is the best of the day; 19:30 and 20:00 are nearly as good and slightly less busy.

Tickets are same-day and the popular evening sailings sell out on weekends, so buy at the pier when you arrive in the district rather than at the moment you want to board. The boats are open-sided; in heavy rain sailings can be affected, and in August the canal is warm and smells of it.

One dated exception worth knowing: the cruise is suspended on 24 and 25 July for Tenjin Matsuri, when the city’s river traffic is given over to the festival’s own boat procession on the Okawa. If your trip lands on those dates you are not missing out: the festival is the better spectacle by a wide margin.

The pass arithmetic

The Osaka Amazing Pass is now ¥3,500 for one day and ¥5,000 for two, up from ¥2,800 and ¥3,600. A lot of published value calculations were written against the old price and no longer hold.

Against the new price: Osaka Castle ¥1,200 plus Tsutenkaku ¥1,500 plus this cruise ¥2,000 equals ¥4,700, which clears ¥3,500 with room for the transport on top. Drop any one of the three and you are at or below the pass price. A hard day pays; a relaxed day does not.

Two traps in that sum. Kaiyukan, the most expensive admission in the city, is not on the pass. And the Umeda Sky Building is free on the pass only until 15:00, which is the wrong half of the day for that view. The transport-only alternative is the Enjoy Eco Card at ¥820 on weekdays and ¥620 at weekends.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Tombori River Cruise?

¥2,000 for an adult, for a ride of about twenty minutes. It is free with the Osaka Amazing Pass, which is how most people should be buying it.

Where does it depart from?

The Tazaemon-bashi pier on the Dotonbori canal, beside the Don Quijote store with the ferris wheel. Tickets are sold at the pier on the day only; there is no advance booking.

What times does it run?

On the hour and the half-hour between 11:00 and 21:00. The last sailing at 21:00 is the best one, because the entire point of the trip is illuminated signage.

Is it ever cancelled?

It is suspended on 24 and 25 July for Tenjin Matsuri, when the city’s river traffic is given over to the festival’s boat procession. Heavy weather can also affect sailings, since the boats are open-sided.

Is it worth ¥2,000?

On its own, marginally – twenty minutes is short. As one of the three big items on an Osaka Amazing Pass day, alongside Osaka Castle at ¥1,200 and Tsutenkaku at ¥1,500, it is what makes the ¥3,500 pass pay for itself.
