Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan

Dynamic pricing 10:00–20:00 Tempozan, Minato-ku

We are not going to print a price for Kaiyukan, because there is not one. The aquarium moved to dynamic pricing: the adult admission varies with the date, and a Saturday in August and a wet Tuesday in February do not cost the same. Any guide quoting one fixed adult figure is quoting a number that was true on some unnamed day.

What we can say is that on most dates this is the most expensive admission in Osaka, and that it is not on the Osaka Amazing Pass. That second fact is the one that wrecks budgets, because the standard case for the ¥3,500 pass is built by adding up big-ticket attractions, and the biggest ticket in the city is not among them.

A building you walk down, not around

Kaiyukan opened in 1990 and its design still has no real imitators. You are taken by escalator to the eighth floor and then walk downward on a single spiral, circling the same set of tanks repeatedly and seeing each one from a different depth. The Pacific Ocean tank at the centre is nine metres deep and holds a whale shark; you meet it first near the surface and last from the bottom, and the animal you saw as a silhouette becomes a thing with a face.

The consequence is that you cannot go back. The route is one-way by construction. If you rush the top floors you do not get to revisit them, and the top floors – the Japan Forest, the Aleutian Islands, the Monterey Bay otters – are where the route is least crowded.

The whale shark is the reason a large share of visitors come and is also the reason some do not. Keeping the largest fish in the sea in a nine-metre tank is not uncontroversial, and if that troubles you, it will trouble you here specifically rather than abstractly.

The money, honestly

Dynamic pricing means the useful advice is procedural rather than numerical: check the price for your actual date on the official site before you commit to the day. Weekends, school holidays and the Obon and New Year weeks price at the top of the range. A weekday outside holidays prices at the bottom. The gap is large enough to be worth shifting a day for.

Then the pass question. The Osaka Amazing Pass covers around forty attractions and Kaiyukan is not one of them. This matters because the pass’s own value case now needs Osaka Castle at ¥1,200, Tsutenkaku at ¥1,500 and the Tombori River Cruise at ¥2,000 to reach ¥4,700 against a ¥3,500 price. People who plan a pass day around the aquarium find they have bought the pass and then paid full price for the main event.

The Tempozan ferris wheel next door is on the pass, for whatever that is worth. So is the Captain Line ferry across to Universal Studios Japan, which is the one genuinely good reason to combine this side of the bay with USJ.

Hours, crowds and access

Hours are generally 10:00 to 20:00 with last entry an hour before closing, and they move seasonally, so confirm alongside the price. The last two hours are far calmer than the first two, and the lighting in the deep tanks is better for it.

Osakako on the Chuo subway line is five minutes’ walk. From Umeda that is a change at Hommachi and about twenty-five minutes. Note that Yumeshima, one stop further out on the same line, is an active demolition site since Expo 2025 closed in October 2025 and is not visitable; do not build an afternoon around going to look at it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Kaiyukan cost?

There is no single answer. Kaiyukan uses dynamic pricing and the adult rate varies by date, so the price has to be checked for the specific day you plan to go. On most dates it is the most expensive admission in Osaka.

Is Kaiyukan on the Osaka Amazing Pass?

No. It is excluded, and this is the single most common miscalculation people make with the pass, because the aquarium is the largest admission in the city.

What are Kaiyukan's opening hours?

Generally 10:00 to 20:00 with last admission an hour before closing, varying seasonally. Check the official site for the date you intend to visit, since the same page carries that day’s price.

How long do you need at Kaiyukan?

Two to three hours. The route is a one-way descending spiral and you cannot backtrack, so pace the upper floors rather than hurrying to the whale shark.

Can I combine Kaiyukan with Universal Studios Japan?

Yes. The Captain Line ferry runs across the bay between Tempozan and the USJ side, and it is covered by the Osaka Amazing Pass even though the aquarium is not.
