Craftroom

No. 72, Asia 2026 Six seats Station basement

Craftroom placed 72nd on Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2026, and it has six seats. Those two facts together are the entire planning problem, and no amount of enthusiasm gets around the arithmetic: a bar on an international list with a capacity of six is going to be full most nights it is open.

It sits in the basement of a 1970s station building – strip lighting in the corridor, a row of shuttered units, the specific municipal dreariness of Japanese commuter infrastructure – and then a door, and then one of the best bars in Asia.

What six seats actually means

It means there is no bar in the sense of a place you drift into. There is one counter, one bartender within arm’s reach of everyone, and five other people who will hear everything you say. It is closer to sitting in somebody’s workshop than to going out.

It also means the service model is different. At six seats the bartender can do things that are impossible at twenty: watch how fast you are drinking, adjust the next one accordingly, prepare an ingredient specifically because of something you said ten minutes ago. The 50 Best citation singles out the bar’s focus and precision and a grasshopper – a crème de menthe and cream cocktail usually treated as a period joke – rebuilt to the point where it is the thing people talk about. That is what six seats buys.

The practical consequences: do not arrive as a group of four, do not arrive loud, and do not arrive intending to stay for one. Two people, two or three drinks, ninety minutes.

Getting in

Contact ahead. The Asia’s 50 Best listing carries the current address and contact details, and a hotel concierge calling on your behalf is the most reliable route if your Japanese is limited. Early in the evening is better than late; the six seats do not turn over quickly because nobody in them is in a hurry.

Have a fallback. Bar Nayuta, No. 70 on the same list, is the obvious one and is larger, and Augusta Tarlogie is the whisky alternative – though it is closed on Tuesdays. Planning an evening around a six-seat bar with no plan B is how people end up in a hotel lobby at ten o’clock.

Expect a cover charge and expect drinks priced as international cocktails. For what it is worth, this is still cheaper than the equivalent room in Tokyo or Singapore, which is a small consolation and a real one.

The basement, and why it matters

Japanese cities put their best small bars underground and behind unmarked doors as a matter of routine, and it is not affectation. Rent is the reason: a basement unit in a 1970s station block costs a fraction of street frontage, and a six-seat bar cannot pay street frontage. The economics produce the aesthetic rather than the other way round.

It is worth understanding because it generalises. The best drinking in Osaka is almost never at ground level with a sign on it – it is upstairs above a shop, or down a stair beside a pachinko parlour, or in a converted unit in a corridor of shuttered businesses. The instinct to distrust a place like that is exactly backwards here.

Osaka has only two bars anywhere on the 2026 Asia list, both in the 51–100 extension. The city’s depth is in its standing bars and its Shinsekai counters rather than in cocktail rooms, and an honest Osaka evening usually mixes the two.

Frequently asked questions

How many seats does Craftroom have?

Six. That is the entire capacity, which is why a bar ranked 72nd in Asia is effectively full whenever it is open. Contact ahead rather than walking in.

Where is Craftroom ranked?

No. 72 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2026, in the 51 to 100 extended list, alongside Bar Nayuta at No. 70. They are the only two Osaka bars on the list.

What is it known for?

Precision, and a rebuilt grasshopper – a crème de menthe and cream cocktail normally treated as a period curiosity – which the 50 Best citation singles out.

Is it really in a station basement?

Yes, in a 1970s station building. That is normal for serious small bars in Japan: basement rent is what makes a six-seat room financially possible at all.

What should I do if it is full?

Have a fallback before you go. Bar Nayuta is larger and on the same list; Augusta Tarlogie is the whisky option, though it closes on Tuesdays.
